SEATTLE (AP) – A Washington State Patrol (WSP) official was arrested in a stab operation after showing up in a hotel room where he was expecting two children but was instead met by a SWAT team.

The Seattle Police Department Internet Crimes Against Children arrested the agent, identified by King County Attorneys as 27-year-old Trevor J. Smith, for alleged attempted rape of children.

The Seattle Times reported that based on information from the WSP, prosecutors said the man was working as a commercial vehicle law enforcement officer assigned to the school bus inspection program. No children were present when safety inspections were carried out on the buses.

Jail records show he was transferred to King County Jail on Tuesday night. He was not charged. Prosecutors said the bail had been set at $ 150,000. It wasn’t immediately clear whether Smith had a lawyer.

A statement on the likely cause said the employee responded to a complaint from an undercover officer on February 18.

The man, believed to be exchanging graphic messages with the mother of two girls, ages 6 and 11, met the undercover officer for dinner in Kirkland before allegedly buying condoms and meeting her at a hotel.

Washington State Patrol Sgt. Darren Wright said the employee has been released from duties and is undergoing an administrative investigation.

“As parents and Washingtoners, we are shocked and deeply disappointed by these grave and significant allegations,” Wright said. “In order to ensure a fair and transparent process, WSP cannot and will not be involved in the investigation and is deferring all inquiries regarding the investigation to the Seattle Police Department.”
