Utah invoice seeks to stop, detect inmate intercourse assault

A bill to protect inmates from sexual assault was passed unanimously by a House Committee on Monday.

House Bill 95, compliant with the Prison Rape Elimination Act, is sponsored by Rep. Angela Romero.

It would require guidelines to be put in place to prevent, detect, and respond to sexual assault against inmates in prison. The measure lays down requirements for investigating sexual assaults against inmates and requires the collection and reporting of data on sexual assault.

Training and further education would be required for employees and inmates.

The House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee voted on the measure on Monday. It is now moving into the full house for testing.
