Somaliland bid unprecedented goodbye to one of its most venerable traditional leaders and a descendant of one of the oldest ethnic sultanates in the region.

Sultan Mohamed Sultan Abdulkadir Sultan Abdullahi died in Hargeisa on Friday and was buried in the same city on Saturday.

Traditional leaders from across Somaliland and neighboring countries attended a funeral that broke all available records for the number of people escorting the late Sultan to his final home.

His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Somaliland, Musa Bihi Abdi, the leaders of the Somaliland opposition parties, Dr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi ‘Irro’ of Waddani and UCID engineer Faisal Ali Waraabe, members of parliament, ministers and thousands of mourners attended the final prayer rites that preceded the funeral.

President Bihi and a large number of other dignitaries acknowledged the preeminent role the Sultan played in both the peacebuilding years and the nation of the Somaliland Republic, when his word brought often difficult situations to an amicable conclusion.

Sultan Mohamed went back to a series of sultans whose leadership began in 1722.

His son Daud took over the coat as soon as his father was laid to rest.

The sultan’s untimely death affected almost everyone who had the honor of meeting him or witnessing his outspoken mediation.

The messages of Stuart Brown, the British representative in Somaliland, and Ayan Mohamoud, MBE, and the former Somaliland ambassador to the United Kingdom were among the first, along with those of the president and the party leaders.
