MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Russian MiG-31 aircraft has escorted a US Air Force patrol aircraft over the Barents Sea, the Northern Fleet announced on Friday.
On June 4, Russian air traffic control devices discovered an air target approaching the Russian state border over the Barents Sea.
“A MiG-31 fighter was deployed to identify the air target and prevent violation of the Russian state border. The crew of the Russian fighter identified the air target as a US Air Force R-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft and escorted it over the Barents Sea” , it says in the statement.
After the US fighter plane turned its course away from the Russian state border, the Russian fighter plane returned safely to the airfield. The Russian fighter’s flight was carried out in strict accordance with international rules for the use of airspace and the state border was not violated, it said.
