The Saddle Brook Police Chief has been charged with misconduct and other crimes related to the alleged use of officers to conduct escorts for his funeral home.

The attorney general’s office said Monday that 59-year-old police chief Robert Kugler has been charged with conspiracy, official misconduct and corruption of public resources.

A criminal complaint alleges that Kugler ordered officers to escort police vehicles during regular opening hours and that the city did not reimburse the costs.

A voicemail was left in Kugler’s office on Monday.

The Bergen District Attorney’s Office has taken over the day-to-day operations of Saddle Brook Police.
