Mom of Man Arrested in Abduction, Intercourse Assault and Capturing of Miami-Dade Boy Speaks – NBC 6 South Florida
Maira Santiesteban, the mother of the man accused of kidnapping, sexually assaulting and shooting a 12-year-old boy in Miami, still cannot believe her son’s alleged crimes. “I still don’t believe it,” said Santiesteban. “It happened, but as his mother, I still don’t believe it.” In an interview from Cuba, Santiesteban fought back tears and tried to find an explanation for the events that took place and asked the boy’s family for forgiveness.
“As a mother, as a grandmother, I am very sorry about what the boy is going through because it didn’t have to happen.”
Officials arrested 43-year-old Aliex Santiesteban early in the morning of March 27 and charged him on multiple charges, including sexual battery with a lethal weapon, kidnapping and attempted murder. He was detained in Miami Dade Prison and detained, records show.
Police say DNA evidence and “good old-fashioned policing” brought them to Santiesteban.
In the interview, Santiesteban told NBC 6 that on the day he was arrested, she spoke to her son and she didn’t notice anything strange.
“Something big must have happened to him because … I still don’t understand,” she said. “I do not understand.”
The Miami-Dade Police Department continues to urge the community to take a close look at the suspect and ask anyone to contact him if he is a victim of Aliex Santiesteban.
