Kootenay Columbia principal escorts erratic intruder from college grounds – Nelson Star

A school principal from Kootenay Columbia is commended by the Trail RCMP for calmly and safely de-escalating last week at Warfield Elementary School.

On the morning of February 12, the Greater Trail Police Station received an incident report at 8:30 a.m. after a man wandered into Webster Elementary School on Schofield Highway in Warfield.

The man, who was reported to be acting erratically, wanted to give an impromptu presentation at the school and began to partially undress after being confronted by Brian Stefani, the headmaster.

Stefani kept calm and kept the incident from escalating and escorted the man outside of school.

The RCMP frontline officers reacted immediately to the locale and arrested the intruder.

The police suspect the man may have suffered from a mental health problem and was under the influence of a substance.

The 34-year-old Trail man was held in police custody until he was sober.

He has not been formally charged at this point and continues to be monitored in the community.

“The Trail RCMP would like to acknowledge Webster Elementary School Headmaster Brian Stefani for his bravery and professionalism in handling the incident until the police arrive,” said the department commander, Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.
