LONDON (AP) – Former Scottish leader Alex Salmond on Friday criticized his successor and former friend’s administration for undermining democratic principles and the rule of law in the latest episode of a political tug-of-war that threatens to destroy Scotland’s independence movement.

Salmond’s comments came while testifying before a committee in the Scottish Parliament investigating the government’s handling of sexual harassment allegations against him. Scotland’s highest civil court ruled the government had acted unlawfully in 2019, awarding Salmond more than £ 500,000 (US $ 695,000) in legal costs.

Salmond criticized his successor, First Secretary Nicola Sturgeon, for blurring the distinctions between her government, the Scottish National Party and civil service, suggesting that she was deliberately trying to destroy his reputation. The government and civil service have systematically tried to avoid public scrutiny by refusing to provide evidence requested by parliament, he said.

“The step towards independence, which I have sought and continue to strive for all my political life, must be accompanied by institutions whose leadership is strong and robust and which can protect every citizen from arbitrary authority,” Salmond told the legislature is principle a key component of the rule of law. “
