INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (KWWL) – The Iowa State Patrol and first responders across the state of Hawkeye plan to pay their respects to fallen Iowa State Patrol Segeant Jim Smith on Sunday as his body is removed from the state medical examiner’s office in Ankeny to his hometown of Independence .

The Iowa Medical Examiner plans to release Sgt. Smith’s body around 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
Upon release, Iowa State Patrol will escort Sgt Smith’s body to I-35 north to Highway 20.
The escort will continue on Highway 20 east to Highway 150 in Independence.
Eventually the escort will be on Highway 150 north to Reiff’s funeral home at 216 3rd Ave. Drive SE
Independence Police plan to haul Sgt. Smith’s body through the Independence City.

Members of the public are encouraged to walk in honor of Sgt. Smith
