INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (KWWL) – The Iowa State Patrol and first responders across the state of Hawkeye are planning to pay their respects to the fallen Iowa State Patrol Segeant Jim Smith on Sunday, and his body will be escorted to his hometown of Independence from the State Medical Examiner’s office in Ankeny .
Smith was shot dead Friday night while trying to arrest a barricaded suspect at the Grundy Center.
The Iowa Medical Examiner plans to release Sgt. Smith’s body around 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
Upon release, Iowa State Patrol will escort Sgt Smith’s body to I-35 north to Highway 20.
The escort will continue on Highway 20 east to Highway 150 in Independence.
Eventually the escort will be on Highway 150 north to Reiff’s funeral home at 216 3rd Ave. Drive SE
Independence Police plan to haul Sgt. Smith’s body through the Independence City.
