Whitman, mass. (WHDH) – A ward gathers around a Whitman toddler who is due to have his second open heart surgery on Wednesday.
Police from the local cities gathered to take Nathaniel Rodman, also known as “Nate the Great,” and his family to Boston Children’s Hospital.
Nathaniel has been diagnosed with numerous health problems including Fallot’s tetralogy with pulmonary atresia, uncovered coronary sinus, bilateral SVC, and hydronephrosis.
He has had seven heart and kidney surgeries or procedures, including his first open heart surgery when he was 5 weeks old.
Nathaniel’s father Matt, who is also a Randolph cop, said they were touched by the community’s support.
“We always had everyone’s support, as my wife said, but to see the support of the police here, people I work with, surrounding communities, people I don’t even know, people who have no idea who we are To be here it really says a lot and it’s just heartwarming, ”he said.
Randolph Police Det. Melissa Greener added, “It’s really like family to us, and that’s exactly what policing is. We come together in times of need for the family and that is what we want to do for him. “
