Bear will get RCMP escort again into the bush in Ladysmith

VICTORIA – Mounties on Vancouver Island arranged a hasty escort Friday to lead a wandering black bear off the streets back into the bush.

A video of the incident was posted on the City of Ladysmith’s Facebook page, showing two RCMP cruisers with their lights on, slowly driving alongside the faulty bear on 2nd Avenue.

The bear then entered Ladysmith Cemetery, where according to the community it disappeared into the trees.

“We’re grateful here on Vancouver Island to be able to live in nature, and that sometimes means coming into contact with wildlife,” wrote the city staff.

“You can help manage black bear encounters by limiting the attractants such as trash cans and compost bins left outside.”

The city requests residents to report encounters with potentially dangerous wildlife to the BC Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277 or the Ladysmith RCMP at 250-245-2215.
