Bartlett priest, Father Christopher Ciomek, requested to step apart from Saint Peter Damian Parish following intercourse abuse allegations
BARTLETT, IL (WLS) – Cardinal Blase Cupich urged a suburban priest to retire from the ministry for sexually abusing a minor more than 30 years ago.
Father Christopher Ciomek was the pastor of Saint Peter Damian in Bartlett.
According to a letter to parishioners, he is living outside the community while the matter is being investigated.
“Allegations are allegations that have not been proven true or false. Therefore, guilt or innocence should not be assumed,” the letter read, adding: “In the coming days and weeks, members of the Archdiocese’s Office for the Protection of The children and the youth are available to answer your questions and to support you during this challenging time. “
Father Curtis Lambert has been appointed temporary administrator of the ward. Father Lambert currently lives in retirement in St. Peter Damian, but according to the archdiocese he will take care of the needs of the parish.
The allegation was reported to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and the Cook County State attorney, Cardinal Cupich said.
“The Archdiocese of Chicago takes all allegations of sexual misconduct seriously and encourages anyone who feels they have been sexually abused by a priest, deacon, religious or lay person to speak up,” he said.
