33-Yr-Outdated Nurse Charged With Intercourse Assault on 87-Yr-Outdated Dementia Affected person After Allegedly Being Caught within the Act – NBC Los Angeles
A nurse was accused Monday of sexually assaulting an 87-year-old woman with dementia at a senior citizens’ home in Santa Ana where he worked for three years.
Juan Sandoval, 33, of Orange, is charged with one crime each, intent on committing a prison victim and a sexual battery against an institutional victim, and an offense of inflicting injury on an older adult.
Sandoval pleaded not guilty to his indictment in the prison courtroom and ordered a return to court on March 15 at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.
Police were called to the Sunflower Gardens retirement home at 12:37 p.m. Thursday after a caretaker at the nursing home sexually assaulted a resident earlier that day, Santa Ana police said.
Sandoval allegedly took the woman down a hallway to a bedroom where he sexually assaulted her. A staff member walking across the room saw the alleged attack through an open door and confronted Sandoval, who had “dressed” and left the room, investigators said.
The employee immediately alerted a supervisor. When the officers arrived, Sandoval was still on duty and was arrested without incident, the police said.
The facility has more than 40 clients with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, and police said they were concerned that there could potentially be more victims.
